Washington County, 1905 - Foltz photographs.
This family album of photographs taken in Hagerstown and Williamsport, Maryland in 1905, adds some new views of Washington County. It is believed all the photos were taken by Arthur Dornblaser, a piano tuner who lived on Summit Avenue with his wife Elizabeth Isminger Dornblaser and daughter, Madge.
Firemen's Parade, Hagerstown, 1905 Arthur Dornblaser
Included in these photographs of Hagerstown are Public Square scenes filled with people for a parade, part of the 1905 Maryland Firemen's Convention and Conference. A fire engine competition at Marsh Run is pictured. The Hagerstown Fairground was the site of horse racing, harness racing, trapeze artists and gymnasts. Dornblazer also photographed the railroad stations and tracks of Hagerstown during the period.
Western Maryland Regional Library is grateful to the descendants of Madge Dornblaser Foltz and Joseph S. Foltz, Ann Newman of Pennsylvania and Suzanne Bucci of West Virginia, for sharing these photographs with the Western Maryland Room of the Washington County Free Library and the Western Maryland Historical Library.
Thanks also to Randy Anderson for help identifying the subject matter and location of the photographs. |
